AN Aussie surf school instructor was
due to be airlifted from Bali on Tuesday night after being brutally
bashed outside a nightclub on the Indonesian holiday isle.
Matt Scarff, 41, from Byron Bay, was clinging to life in an induced
coma after emergency surgery in a Balinese hospital to relieve pressure
on his brain.
He is believed to have been king hit outside the Townhouse nightclub in up-market Seminyak early on Saturday morning.
Mr Scarff's cousin, Tony Maguire, said his friend had been doing it 'tough' after the attack but his condition had stabilised since the surgery.
"He is still in the drug induced coma but all vital signs are good,'' Mr Maguire posted on Facebook yesterday afternoon.
"The green light has been given in the last hour to fly by medevac to Darwin some time late this afternoon. He should be there tonight if all goes to plan.''
Details of the attack were not clear and it is not known if the perpetrator has been caught.
"All his friends were inside drunk so no-one knows what happened,'' a Bali surf school staffer told The Courier-Mail.
"Everyone is very upset. He is a good man.''
Mr Scarff's family and close friends were at his bedside in hospital.
Originally from Bendigo, Mr Scarff had been dividing his time between Byron Bay and Bali.
He had been running the Bali Learn to Learf School in front of the Hard Rock Hotel in Kuta for about 15 years.
Close friend Brendan Baker said Mr Scarff was 'a good fellow' who was the victim of 'one of those random acts of cowardice'.
"I expect it will be a long recovery period for him,'' Mr Baker told the Bendigo Advertiser.
Mr Maguire said his cousin did not have travel insurance as he had been living in Bali.
He said the medevac would cost an estimated $45,000 and has launched a public appeal for funds.
